.Com - Undisputed King Of The Domain World
What's left to say about .com names? The phrase "dot-com" has entered dictionaries world-wide and will always be associated with the birth of e-Commerce on the Internet.
Currently, there are over 30 million domain names registered world-wide and over 20 million of these are dot com names.
Owning a web site with the dot com domain name shows that you are serious about your web site, and nearly all e-Commerce web sites choose to use dot com domains.
But will this ever change? Some say it will. They argue that there are so few good .com names available, and this will naturally lead to the usage of other domain names. What they forget is that most .com names are owned by domain speculators, not web site owners. So if
you are launching a new Internet business, you have at least the following four choices when trying to locate a name for your site:
1. Register a New .Com
If you can find a good, two-word unregistered .com that accurately describes your business image, go ahead and pat yourself on the back, but not until you have registered the name. It might no longer be available by the time you have finished patting yourself.
The more likely scenario is that you will spend two hours finding out that other people have got there first, and the only available dot coms in your field are difficult to spell / remember three-worders. If this is the case, you are better off looking at the other options. Your domain name is the foundation on which all your online activities are based, and you don't want your new business to be handicapped by choosing a bad domain name. Doing business on-line is hard enough without that kind of handicap.
2. Register a Different TLD
Current choices include .net, .org, and a range of new TLDs which include .biz, .info, .name, and
.us.
3. Purchase a .Com in the Secondary Domain Market
This is a great option to take, even if you only have a limited start-up budget for your new venture. Don't be put off by the headline domain name purchase prices that run in the millions. Most domain speculators are struggling, and will gladly accept $500 to $2000 for a good name.
4. Register an Expiring Domain
A large percentage, perhaps 80%+, of all registered domain names are not in use, and many of these are not renewed by the owner. When this happens anyone can register these names. This is becoming a very popular way to find a domain name.
